Silk stockings for two

A young mother gets fifteen dollars when she buys a pair of silk stockings from Kate Chopin. Mrs. Sommers initially believes she should spend the money for her children. But her priorities shift after she experiences a pair silk stockings.

Mrs. Sommers transformed from a selfless provider to her family into someone out of touch and in reality. Mrs. Sommers would do anything to ensure her children were happy. One example is that Mrs. Sommers was up all night shopping before she went to go. However, it wasn’t until the early hours of the morning when she was still awake and making revolving plans in her head that she realized her way towards judicious and proper use of her money. This shows her concern about how money was spent. This shows her insatiable curiosity about what she could do with the money. Ms. Sommers also forgot about lunch. She was so consumed with shopping that she forgot to prepare for her shopping trip. She was so focused on getting shopping done that she forgot to eat lunch. This also shows Mrs. Sommers’ willingness to sacrifice to ensure the family was happy. The conclusion is that Mrs. Sommers was an exceptional mother. However, this would soon change. Mrs. Sommers was a wonderful mother, but her reality lost its meaning once she touched silk stockings. For example, Mrs. Sommers considered silk stockings to have an extremely high value item. She smiled, almost as though she had been asked if it was worth her while looking at a tiara containing diamonds. The stockings were too expensive for Mrs. Sommers, as most people wouldn’t consider wearing a diamond-tiara. This also shows that Mrs. Sommers fell for the stockings immediately and decided to buy them. Additionally, Mrs. Sommers began to spend money she couldn’t afford on expensive meals and tips for waiters. He took the money and gave it to her. After that, he bowed down before her like a princess of the royal blood. It is evident that Mrs. Sommers spent money like it didn’t matter by the end her shopping trip. This also indicates that Mrs. Sommers was becoming a victim to her shopping spree. Mrs. Sommers was unable to remember who she was or what she was supposed doing after she touched the silk stockings. Mrs. Sommers’ priorities had completely changed by the end. She was no longer a conservative mom.

No matter what, Mrs. Sommers was an entirely different person at end of story than she was in the beginning
